Keeping children safe in the context of sports

Ways for sports coaches to keep children safe from sexual abuse in the context of sports while promoting healthy sports environments.

Keeping children safe in the context of sports

Most of us can recall at least one teacher who made a lasting positive impact on our lives—someone who offered valuable advice, encouraged us to strive for improvement, or provided support when we needed a trustworthy adult.

Sports coaches can have a similar influence on a child. They play a key role in not only keeping them safe but also serving as lifelong mentors.

In many sports environments, an imbalance of power exists between coaches and athletes. Physical contact is often necessary, and there is typically a male-dominated gender ratio. Inappropriate sexual behavior may be tolerated, while discrimination and gender inequality are often overlooked. Additionally, situations such as overnight stays, carpooling, and changing rooms can increase a child's vulnerability to abuse.

However, a sports coach can be instrumental in fostering a healthy and respectful environment by:

  • Promoting respect among athletes, coaches, and between athletes and coaches
  • Maintaining clear boundaries (physical, emotional, verbal, mental, and sexual)
  • Being attentive to interactions within and around the sports setting
  • Promoting and encouraging consent at all times
  • Championing gender equality
  • Educating themselves on the prevention of child sexual abuse
  • Speaking up when witnessing inappropriate behavior
Sports reflect society, but they also have the power to lead by setting strong examples of inclusive behavior and positive values.

From the perspective of sports organizations and associations, there are additional steps that can be taken to ensure the safety of children:

  • Conduct background checks on all staff members with access to youth
  • Provide staff training on recognizing and reporting child sexual abuse, including knowledge of the POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act
  • Implement a staff code of ethics that addresses inappropriate behavior
  • Establish Child Protection Policies with clear reporting procedures

By prioritizing these measures, we can provide children with a secure and enriching environment to grow stronger in body, mind, and spirit.

Every child athlete deserves a safe and enjoyable sports experience!
